Electrotherapy TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit is a type of therapeutic modality typically used in physical therapy & chiropractic clinics.
TENS is a small machine with electrodes that send stimulating pulses along nerve strands and across the skin’s surface. These impulses help to reduce pain by encouraging the body to produce more endorphins, which act as a natural painkiller.
Also, the electrical impulses can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles.
An electrotherapy TENS unit can be used to help manage both chronic and acute pain; your physical therapist/chiropractor can help determine the best use of TENS for your condition.
Setting up your TENS Machine?
With Opry Medical Group‘s state of the art, electrotherapy TENS unit setting up is quick and easy.
TENS is used by applying small electrodes to your body with an adhesive.
The electrodes should be over the area that is causing you pain.
Each individual TENS Unit comes with an instruction manual which will explain the different settings and most include pictures to show you where to stick the electrodes.
After you set up the TENS unit for the correct application, turn on the machine and an electrical current is sent through the electrodes.
A tingling sensation is felt in the underlying skin and muscle.
You can slowly and carefully increase the intensity of the stimulation provided by the TENS.
The intensity should be raised until the sensation provided underneath the electrodes feels strong but comfortable.
You will feel a slight tingling and massaging sensation underneath the electrodes.
TENS can be applied for 30 to 45 minutes, and use around up to 4 to 6 times a day.
Please avoid using TENS while bathing or showering, while driving a car, or while sleeping.
How Does A Electrotherapy TENS Unit Work?
This signal from TENS disrupts the pain signal that is being sent from the affected area to the surrounding nerves. When TENS is applied, your brain will pay attention to the electrical signal, and not pay attention to your pain signal.
This is called the gate theory of TENS—imagine your pain pathways have a gate that opens up to your brain. Only one signal gets through the gate at a time.
It is theorized that TENS may also work by increasing the release of pain-fighting endorphins in the area where the electricity is supplied
This natural chemically-mediated process can help decrease your pain and enhance your quality of life.
